3D printing technology in particular, and 3D technology in general, is a key part of Industry 4.0. It was also the main theme of a scientific conference organized on the morning of May 18, 2018 by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology and Saigon Innovation Hub (the Center for Applied Science and Technology Advances), with strong support from businesses in the 3D technology field.
- Save time and improve product quality with 3D technology in bronze casting.
- Airless bicycle tires can now be 3D printed, and they will never go flat.
- Featured 3D technology projects by 3D Vietnams.
The scientific conference was a key part of the 3D Technology Day event held at SIHUB on May 18, 2018, as part of a series of activities for Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18).

The event also had an exhibition area with more than 30 booths showing 3D printing products. On this occasion, the Center for Applied Science and Technology Advances (Saigon Innovation Hub) also announced the founding of the 3D Technology Club. The club aims to connect individuals and organizations working in 3D technology so they can share experience, knowledge and skills in using 3D technology in production and daily life. It also gives the field an academic forum on 3D technology to drive innovation and improve productivity and quality in study, production and daily life by putting the strengths of 3D technology to use.

Frequently asked questions
What role does 3D printing play in Industry 4.0?
3D printing is the link between digital data and real products. It lets you go straight from a design file to a physical part without a mold. This helps businesses shorten product development, make personalized products on demand and handle small batches more flexibly. Combined with 3D scanning, simulation and digital data management, 3D printing becomes part of a smart manufacturing chain.
Where should small and medium businesses start with 3D printing?
Start with uses that pay off quickly, such as product prototypes, jigs, inspection gauges and replacement parts. Using a 3D printing service first lets you assess the benefits before investing in machines and staff training. Once demand is steady and large enough, you can consider buying the right equipment.
Can 3D printing replace traditional manufacturing?
Not completely. It complements traditional manufacturing. 3D printing shines for prototypes, small batches, complex shapes and personalized products, while injection molding, casting and CNC machining are still better for large-volume production. Many shops combine both, for example 3D printing molds or master patterns for traditional casting.
What skills do students need to work in 3D technology?
Core skills include 3D CAD design, an understanding of materials and printing technologies, and the ability to work with STL mesh data. Knowing 3D scanning, reverse engineering and post-processing will open up more job opportunities. Joining clubs, conferences and real projects is a good way to build experience.
